Comparative Patent Law of EPO & US Part 1

The course contains eight main modules, including:
1) Basics (terms, background, history) of
Patent Law in Europe;
2) The organization of the EPO;
3) an overview of the Patent Protection
requirements;
4) an analysis of novelty and inventive step requirements under the EPC; and
5) 
a summary of sufficiency and added matter requirements at the EPO.

This course accommodates students who want to pursue a career in intellectual property law, as well as those students who simply want an introduction to intellectual property law and practices. A technical background is not required.

At the conclusion of this course, the successful student will competently: 1. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the differences between patent law in Europe and in the US. 2. Students will identify and explain the legal basis of the patentability requirements at the EPO. 3. Students will identify and explain best strategies for drafting patents meeting the standards of the EPO. 4. Students will demonstrate the ability to analyze cases and/or statutes. 5. Students will demonstrate the ability to apply the law to new factual contexts using the traditional IRAC format.
